Case Study
Idea
Design of Indoor Navigation App
Project Overview
As part of the 9th HNG internship program, my Team and I developed a project proposal for an indoor navigation app called "Blueprint." This app aims to provide a solution for individuals and businesses by offering an easy-to-use navigation system for indoor spaces, where traditional navigation tools like Google Maps fall short.

The goal of this case study is to provide an overview of the proposal and the potential impact of the app on the industry.

Background
Aug 2022
The project was unique as it was not only required to be appealing to potential investors, but also had a tight deadline of less than a week for completion. My goal for this project was to create a user-friendly and intuitive indoor navigation app that could make it easy for individuals and businesses to navigate indoor spaces.

This was a challenging project, but with the help of my teammate, we were able to create a well-designed and functional app that met the criteria set by the mentors.

Opportunities of Digital Indoor Navigation

  1. Improved Customer Experience: A digital indoor navigation app provides a smooth and efficient way for customers to navigate through a building, helping them find their desired location with ease.

The app can also enhance customer engagement with features like push notifications, in-app promotions, and targeted advertisements.
  2. Increased Analytics and Insights: The app can provide valuable data on customer behavior and preferences, providing businesses with insights to improve their offerings and increase foot traffic.
  3. Accessibility and Security: The app can help individuals with disabilities or mobility issues by providing an easier way to navigate buildings. It can also integrates with security systems, providing real-time tracking of individuals within the building.
  4. Emergency Services Integration: Integration with emergency services can provide first responders with real-time information about the building layout and evacuation routes and can be used to quickly and accurately locate individuals during an emergency.

This helps to ensure that buildings are prepared for any potential crisis and that individuals can be safely evacuated in the event of an emergency.
  5. Personalization and Location-Based Marketing: The app can offer personalized services based on customer preferences and behaviors, such as customized advertisements and recommendations.

It also enables location-based marketing, providing businesses with the opportunity to target customers with relevant offers and promotions.

Challenges
Aug 2022
  1. Technical Challenges: The challenges associated with the accuracy and reliability of indoor mapping and positioning systems, such as signal interference and weak GPS signals, can be a hindrance to the effective functioning of a digital indoor navigation app. Compatibility issues with different devices and operating systems may also arise.
  2. Privacy Concerns: The collection and use of customer data for personalization and location-based marketing may raise privacy concerns, as well as the real-time tracking of individuals within the building.
  3. Implementation and Maintenance Costs: The implementation and maintenance costs of a digital indoor navigation app can be high, requiring significant investments in hardware, software, and personnel.
  4. Data Accuracy and Updating: The accuracy and updating of indoor maps and building information can be a challenge, requiring frequent updates and maintenance.

Inconsistent or outdated information may cause confusion and frustration among customers.

Interviews and Surveys
Aug 2022
Despite the constraints, our user research plan was key in guiding our approach to these interviews and surveys, ensuring that we gathered meaningful data that would inform our design decisions.

The results helped us to understand the needs and expectations of our target users and make informed design decisions within the limited time frame.

Findings

  1. Common challenges faced by both individual users and businesses when navigating indoors, such as confusion and frustration with directions, difficulty locating specific destinations, and a need for more accessible information.
  2. In our surveys, 80% of respondents reported having trouble finding their way around indoor spaces, while 95% said they would use an indoor navigation app if it was available. These statistics show a clear demand for a more streamlined indoor navigation solution.
  3. The accuracy and reliability of the navigation information, ease of use, and user-friendly interface were the most important features and functionalities indicated by participants.
  4. Participants expressed expectations for the indoor navigation app, including the ability to easily find specific destinations, receive real-time updates, and have a seamless experience without interruptions.

Home

The home page is designed to provide users with a quick and clear overview of their current location and the available options to explore the indoor environment. The page displays a map of the building, highlighting the user's current location and orientation.

With the search feature, users can quickly locate specific areas or points of interest within the building by searching for keywords, such as "restroom" or "cafeteria." This feature allows users to easily navigate the building and find what they need without having to manually scan the map or rely on directional cues.

Navigation and Wayfinding
Aug 2022
When users search for a location, the app provides a list of available options based on their search query, and once they select a location, the app displays a detailed route to the destination. The route is displayed on a map and includes step-by-step instructions on how to get to the location, as well as the estimated time it will take to arrive.

As users move through the building, their progress is tracked in real-time, with their current location displayed on the map. The app also provides turn-by-turn directions to help users navigate through complex spaces and find the fastest route to their destination.

With its detailed route information, real-time location tracking, and turn-by-turn directions, the feature ensures that users can move around the building with confidence and ease.

Augmented Reality
Aug 2022
The AR feature in Blueprint adds an exciting new dimension to the indoor navigation experience. With the AR mode, users can hold up their phone's camera and see virtual 3D objects overlaid on the real world, helping them to better understand their surroundings and navigate with more confidence.

To use the AR feature, users simply select the AR mode from the navigation screen, point their phone's camera at the environment, and move the phone around to explore their surroundings. The AR objects are superimposed on the camera view, giving users a clear sense of direction and orientation. This feature is particularly useful in large and complex buildings, where it can be difficult to get one's bearings and find the right way.

User Testing
Aug 2022
Due to time constraints, we were unable to conduct a full user testing cycle for the Blueprint app. However, we did conduct some informal user testing sessions with a small group of users to gain some initial feedback.

The goal of these sessions was to gather user feedback on the usability and functionality of the app, as well as to identify any potential bugs or issues that may have been missed during design. During these sessions, we observed users as they interacted with the app and recorded their feedback on their experience. We asked users to complete specific tasks within the app. Users provided feedback on the ease of use of the app, the clarity of the interface, and the usefulness of the features.

Presentation and Reception
Aug 2022
We prepared a slide deck that highlighted the key features and benefits of Blueprint, as well as the research and testing that informed our design decisions.

Our goal was to present a compelling case for how Blueprint could help users navigate indoor environments more easily and efficiently, while also addressing pain points and common challenges in this area. During the presentation, we were pleased to receive positive feedback from our mentors, who appreciated the thoughtful and user-centered design of Blueprint.

We were proud of the work we accomplished with Blueprint and were excited to share it with our mentors and potential investors.
